When is the Gilfenklamm Gorge Open?
If you are planning a trip to the Gilfenklamm, it’s important to remember that you are visiting an Alpine rock gorge where nature sets the pace. Consequently, the Gilfenklamm is not a year-round destination and remains closed during the winter months. From November to April, the gorge is completely inaccessible for safety reasons, as snow, ice, and the risk of rockfalls make the narrow wooden walkways far too dangerous.
Once spring has melted the ice and safety experts have cleared the paths, the gates reopen. Generally, the season runs from the beginning of May until early November. A quick tip from me: if it rained heavily the day before, it’s worth double-checking with the local tourist office. During extreme downpours, the gorge may remain closed even in summer. Gilfenklamm Opening Hours in Summer
The Gilfenklamm is generally open every day during the summer season with no closing days. Standard opening hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the peak months of July and August, when the days are longer and visitor numbers are higher, the gorge stays open until 6:00 PM. Please note that the last entry is always 30 minutes before closing time.
Unlike many other hotspots in South Tyrol, you do not need to book tickets online in advance. There are no limited contingents that sell out within the hour. Simply head to the ticket booth—either at the bottom in Stange or at the top in Jaufensteg—buy your ticket, and start your hike.
Important Note
The Gilfenklamm is closed during heavy rain due to the high risk of slipping on the trails. To be safe, I recommend checking with the Ratschings Tourist Office before your visit by calling +39 0472 760 608.
Pro Tip for the Best Experience
If you want to have the gorge almost to yourself, try to arrive right at 9:00 AM. While most people are still finishing their morning coffee, you can enjoy the white marble and the thundering waterfalls in peace. The main crowds usually begin to arrive around 10:30 AM.
