The Gilfenklamm Gorge near Sterzing: South Tyrol’s White Natural Wonder

The Gilfenklamm Gorge near Sterzing (Vipiteno) is a unique natural monument carved into solid marble. Since 1898, visitors have been wandering through this South Tyrolean canyon on secure walkways suspended over thundering waterfalls. The “Ratschings Marble” found here is so renowned that it was used in ancient times for the famous Mithras Stone and later for magnificent buildings like Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

Welcome to a place where the raw power of water meets precious stone. The Gilfenklamm is a hiking destination like no other in Europe. As you walk through, you’ll experience towering waterfalls, peaceful rest areas tucked away in the canyon, and spectacular bridges spanning vertical rock faces.

The development of the gorge began in the late 19th century (1893–1895), and it was officially inaugurated in 1898 as the “Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Klamm.” After the World Wars, it was somewhat forgotten but was extensively renovated starting in 1961 to make it accessible to the public once again.

Rare Marble and Alpine Power in Ratschings

You might often read that Gilfenklamm is the only marble gorge in the world. That’s not quite accurate—if you look toward Asia, the famous Taroko Gorge in Taiwan is another stunning example. However, that doesn’t make Gilfenklamm any less spectacular. It remains one of the most beautiful gorges in the Alps and a favorite in South Tyrol. Over thousands of years, the Ratschingser Bach stream has carved its path through the hard, pure white marble.

While the walls inside the gorge often appear green or grey due to moss and lichen, the brilliant white stone flashes through wherever the water has polished it smooth over the centuries. You can even see this white marble on the trail itself, where the soles of countless hikers have polished the stones underfoot. This local marble was historically used for grand architecture, such as the Hofkirche in Innsbruck.

An eventful hike

Hiking through the gorge is an experience you won’t just see, but also hear and feel. Along well-secured wooden walkways and daring bridge constructions, you will climb approximately 175 meters in elevation. The highlight is the narrowest section, known as the “Kirche” (The Church), where the water plunges 15 meters into a deep rock basin. The roar is so immense that you can feel the raw power of nature vibrating through your entire body, while a fine mist of crystal-clear mountain water provides a refreshing spray. Several viewpoints along the way offer the perfect spot for a short break or a memorable souvenir photo.
