Hiking the Gilfenklamm Gorge near Sterzing

If you find yourself near Sterzing, there is one destination you absolutely cannot miss: the Gilfenklamm gorge. Unlike many other canyons in the Alps, this is one of the rare places on Earth where you can admire a gorge carved directly into pure white marble. Here, the rushing waters of the Ratschingser Bach meet precious stone, creating a contrast of colors and sounds that you truly have to experience for yourself.

Starting in Stange: Your Journey Begins

The hike begins in the quiet village of Stange, located just a short drive or an even more convenient bus ride from the charming town of Sterzing (Vipiteno). From the village center, simply follow the well-marked signs to the ticket office at the lower entrance. Within the first few meters, you will notice the atmosphere change as the air turns wonderfully cool and fresh, leaving the sounds of civilization behind.

Highlights of the Trail: White Cliffs, Bridges and “The Church”

After purchasing your ticket, the path follows the stream for a short distance before entering the actual rock gorge. The most spectacular part of the hike begins once you reach the bridge and cross the water for the first time. From here, wooden walkways and massive stone steps lead you steadily uphill into another world. The trail features bold bridge constructions, some of which hang spectacularly over the abyss.

Keep an eye on the rock beneath your feet and along the walls: this is the valuable Ratschings marble. While moss often gives it a greenish shimmer, you can see it flashing brilliant white wherever the water has polished the stone smooth. The absolute highlight of the hike is a section known as “The Church” (Die Kirche). Here, the gorge narrows dramatically, and the water thunders down a 15-meter waterfall into a deep rock basin. The noise is deafening, and the fine mist on your skin reminds you of the raw power of nature. As you climb higher, the views looking down into the emerald pools become even more impressive. After about an hour, you will reach the upper exit at Jaufensteg in the lower Ratschings Valley.

Return Options: From Medieval Ruins to a Relaxed Descent

Once you reach Jaufensteg, you have three excellent options for your return to Stange:

The Classic Route (Descending through the gorge): You can simply head back the way you came. Far from being boring, the gorge looks completely different from above, and you will likely spot photo opportunities you missed on the way up. The descent takes about 45 minutes.
The Historical Route (Reifenegg Ruins): If you prefer a bit of sun and culture, take the circular path via the Reifenegg ruins. This trail leads through the forest and offers fantastic views across the Ratschings Valley. The 13th-century walls are a perfect spot for a short break. This route takes roughly one hour.
The Gentle Route (Pardaun): Alternatively, you can stroll back via the village of Pardaun on a soft forest and meadow path. This trail is marked as route 11A and 25 and takes about 50 minutes to return to Stange.
